With the matrix we can always choose to notice where we are coming from and where we want to go. We can influence our learners to do the same. Here is a short clip about working with internal or external conflict and how you can use the “matrix tenkan move” to flex things up.

When learners are “stuck”, either in their minds or actions, it can feel like being grabbed and the struggle will begin. The basic move in aikido is tenkan or “turning move”. I turn into my partner, moving alongside him so we can look together at what is going on and what can be done. The relationship between us moves from opposition to collaboration. From here I can help the learners sort their experiences onto the board and loosens the stickiness of the struggle. This works well to defuse the conflict and generate solutions.
