I had the pleasure of presenting at Open Connections today to a great group of young people in the “Shaping Your Life” Program. I love their title so much I am going to steal it from them (kidding). Open Connections is a unique homeschooling community founded on the principles of innovation, collaboration, and a process approach to learning. Co-director Mike Hilbert invited me to present and I felt right at home as I watched everyone participate during morning check in.
We spent a good bit of the morning experiencing the matrix. I started as usual by asking for permission from the group to present my point-of-view.
First, we did a quick psychological flexibility warm-up by experiencing pens/pencils with our five senses and then our minds. Each learner then constructed their own matrix on a sheet of paper. I presented my own matrix to show them how it works. They quickly chimed in and noticed their own toward/away moves and what showed up inside as we went along. We then used the matrix to look together at the purposes of their group, what they were doing to move toward their purposes and brainstormed a few ways to keep moving toward their important stuff, especially when unwanted obstacles and experiences showed up. A good time was had by all.
We ended by taking the picture above while chanting “psychological flexibility!” Definitely a fun and flexible group.
